Fiber Basics -  Technical Nylon & Jacquard Weaving Technical Nylon       Technical nylon is a synthetic fiber, it is  known for its strength, durability, and versatility. Nylon fibers are made  to withstand stress, abrasion, and repeated use. This  makes  them ideal for both everyday and industrial applications. One key observation I took away  from the video is how the fiber is produced through a chemical process and then extruded into thin filaments that are later spun into yarn.     Another   takeaway is that nylon has extremely high tensile strength and is  resistance to wear. This   is why it is widely used in products such as parachutes, ropes, athletic clothing, and upholstery. FIBER TESTING AND PROPERTIES  Fiber testing and material properties is essential in the textile and interior design industries. Fiber performance affects durability, comfort, cost, and sustainability. Through reviewing selected videos on cotton testing, long staple cotton, rayon production, and technical polyester, I gained a deeper understanding of how fibers are evaluated and engineered for specific uses.  The cotton testing video provided an understanding into the scientific methods used to evaluate cotton quality before it enters textile production. A primary instrument discussed was the High-Volume Instrument, which measures multiple fiber characteristics quickly and accurately. These characteristics include fiber length, strength, micronaire, uniformity, and color grade. One of the most important takeaways was the significance of fiber length and strength. Bamboo and Cotton  Understanding the fiber make-up is important in the study of textiles. This is especially in interior design and material specification applications. After watching the instructional videos on fiber identification by burning, bamboo fiber production, and cotton processing I made many observations about fiber chemistry, behavior, sustainability, and performance characteristics.  The burn test is a traditional and practical method used to identify textile fibers. It involves observing how a fiber reacts when exposed to flame, including its odor, burn rate, flame behavior, and residue. This method is particularly useful when laboratory equipment such as microscopes is unavailable. From the video, it becomes clear that plant-based fibers such as cotton and bamboo burn very quickly with a steady yellow flame. Weaves and Knits Weaves When understanding the textile construction and testing process it is essential for an interior designer to specify the materials for a space. This could include commercial, hospitality, and healthcare environments. The performance of the fabric, its durability, and fire resistance impacts the compliance to the codes. Basic Weaving      Basic weaving is when two yarn systems interlace, the warp goes vertical and the weft goes horizontal on the loom. The simplest weave structures are plain weave, twill weave, and satin weave.      A plain weave   is the most basic over-under pattern.  Current Trends in Sustainability       After reading about each of these organizations they have many shared goals one is to operate to make a positive difference in the climate, individuals health, and the built environment. CLF on carbon emissions in materials, Architecture 2030 on climate-aligned performance for buildings and communities, and HBN on human and environmental health hazard transparency in materials. All together they offer a layered approach to carbon reduction, energy performance, and health safety. #3 PRODUCT SELECTION CRITERIA

  Product Selection Criteria  Product Selection is critical to the success of a design, this is why as interior designers it is important for us to be knowledgeable about products. For this project I decided to make the criteria list about the 1500 sq ft space that I will be designing for the project in the class. I have decided to do a 1500 sq ft restaurant. The first criteria are that the products have durability, it needs to be designed for high-traffic and heavy use environments. In a restaurant the space will constantly be exposed to cleaning products, lots of visitors, and possible spills of food or beverages. The materials need to be resistant to impact, scratches, dents, and wear. This doesn't mean that the products will be perfect however they need to be heavy-duty. They also need to be rated for commercial use meaning that they have NSF and ANSI ratings.  They also need to meet safety and code requirements, this is nonnegotiable. LEED certifications offer a structure for healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings. They provide environmental and social benefits; it helps to serve a globally recognized symbol of sustainable leadership. LEED is for all different project types and phases, this includes new construction, core and shell, interior fit-outs, operations and maintenance. LEED as a whole address everything from energy and water use to materials and managing waste.      There are many different rankings; to  achieve LEED certification, a project must first complete all prerequisites. Then they must earn points by selecting and satisfying credit requirements.
