#15 SUMMARY

SUMMARY       Throughout this course, I have learned a significant amount about materials and their role in design, especially through developing a deeper understanding of product knowledge and specifications. At the beginning, there were many aspects of textiles and upholstery that I did not fully understand, but over time I was able to build a stronger foundation. I now have a clearer understanding of how different materials are constructed, how they perform, and why they are selected for specific applications. This knowledge has helped me see design not just from an aesthetic perspective, but also from a functional and technical standpoint.      One of the most valuable things I learned was the difference between natural and synthetic fibers and how each type impacts durability, maintenance, comfort, and cost. Before this course, I did not realize how important fiber content is when selecting materials for different environments. I also gained...

#14 : BATH AND BEDDING PRODUCTS

#14 : BATH AND BEDDING PRODUCTS      Bath and bedding textiles play a huge role in both the comfort and overall experience of interior spaces, blending functionality with design. In the bathroom, textile products such as towels, bath mats, robes, and shower curtains must withstand frequent use, moisture, and repeated washing while still maintaining their appearance and performance. Quality in bath textiles is often determined by material, weight, and construction. For example, higher-end towels are typically made from long-staple cotton varieties, which produce softer, more absorbent, and more durable fibers. These premium options often feature dense loops and higher GSM (grams per square meter), resulting in a plush feel and superior absorbency. In contrast, lower-quality towels may use shorter fibers, leading to reduced softness, quicker wear, and less effective moisture absorption.      Design innovation in bath textiles has evolved to include not...

#13: CARPET INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

# 13 CARPET INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE      Carpet performance depends heavily on proper installation, and different carpet types require different methods. Wall-to-wall carpet, also known as broadloom, is typically installed using either the stretch-in method or glue-down method. Stretch-in installation involves securing the carpet over a cushion pad with tack strips, creating a softer and more comfortable feel that is common in residential spaces. Glue-down installation, more often used in commercial settings, adheres the carpet directly to the subfloor for a firmer, more stable surface. While wall-to-wall carpet provides a seamless and uniform appearance, it can be more difficult to repair if damaged compared to other options.      Carpet tile offers a more flexible and modular installation approach. Tiles are installed individually using adhesive or peel-and-stick backing, making the process faster and easier. One of the main advantages is the ability...

#12 CARPET CUSHIONS (PAD)

# 12 Carpet Cushions (Pad) When people think about flooring, they usually focus on the carpet itself the color, texture, pattern. But what lies beneath it can make an even bigger difference in comfort, durability, and performance. Carpet cushions (also called padding or underlayment) play a critical role in how a carpet feels underfoot, how long it lasts, and even how it sounds and insulates a space. Carpet cushion acts as a support system for your flooring. A good pad: Extends carpet life by absorbing impact Improves comfort and softness Enhances insulation (thermal and acoustic) Helps maintain appearance over time Choosing the right one depends on the space, traffic level, and desired feel.      Rebond padding is the most common type of carpet cushion and is made from recycled foam pieces that are bonded together to create a supportive base. It is typically available in different densities, most commonly 6-pound and 8-pound options. The 6-pound rebond pad i...
