SUMMARY
Throughout this course, I have learned a significant amount about materials and their role in design, especially through developing a deeper understanding of product knowledge and specifications. At the beginning, there were many aspects of textiles and upholstery that I did not fully understand, but over time I was able to build a stronger foundation. I now have a clearer understanding of how different materials are constructed, how they perform, and why they are selected for specific applications. This knowledge has helped me see design not just from an aesthetic perspective, but also from a functional and technical standpoint.
One of the most valuable things I learned was the difference between natural and synthetic fibers and how each type impacts durability, maintenance, comfort, and cost. Before this course, I did not realize how important fiber content is when selecting materials for different environments. I also gained a better understanding of industry codes and classifications, such as those related to performance, flammability, and wear. These standards are essential for ensuring safety and longevity, especially in commercial or high-traffic spaces, and they play a major role in making informed design decisions.
Overall, this course has expanded my understanding of how materials influence both the aesthetic and functional qualities of a space. I feel more confident reading specifications, comparing products, and selecting appropriate materials based on the needs of a project. This knowledge will be extremely valuable moving forward, as it allows me to approach design with a more informed and professional mindset. I now understand that successful design is not just about how a space looks, but also how it performs and holds up over time.
Hi Anna! This is a great summary of what you've learned in this class. I especially like how you talked about the importance of fiber content. I also did not know the importance of it before this class. Knowing more about fabrics and how they are made can help us a lot in our future careers, to ensure we pick good quality products for our designs. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Anna, I really liked your summary of what you have learned from class this semester. I especially liked how you included that what you learned was integrated into your design process and product knowledge for your projects! I felt the same way! I also thought that learning about natural vs manmade textiles and fibers was super interesting! Good job
ReplyDeleteHi Anna, I really enjoyed reading your summary for the course. I liked how you shared your personal growth of understanding and how you're going to carry your new knowledge into the profession. I agree with most of your summarizing points and conclusions, especially about learning the difference between God-made and man-made textiles. Well done!
