# 12 Carpet Cushions (Pad)
When people think about flooring, they usually focus on the carpet itself the color, texture, pattern. But what lies beneath it can make an even bigger difference in comfort, durability, and performance. Carpet cushions (also called padding or underlayment) play a critical role in how a carpet feels underfoot, how long it lasts, and even how it sounds and insulates a space.
Carpet cushion acts as a support system for your flooring. A good pad:
- Extends carpet life by absorbing impact
- Improves comfort and softness
- Enhances insulation (thermal and acoustic)
- Helps maintain appearance over time
Choosing the right one depends on the space, traffic level, and desired feel.
Rebond padding is the most common type of carpet cushion and is made from recycled foam pieces that are bonded together to create a supportive base. It is typically available in different densities, most commonly 6-pound and 8-pound options. The 6-pound rebond pad is lightweight and economical, making it an affordable and widely accessible choice for low-traffic areas such as bedrooms. In contrast, the 8-pound rebond pad has a higher density, which makes it more durable and better able to provide long-term support. This increased density allows it to perform well in moderate-traffic areas like living rooms and hallways, where greater resilience and longevity are needed.
Synthetic horsehair pads serve as a modern alternative to traditional horsehair padding and are made from engineered synthetic fibers designed to replicate the strength and resilience of natural materials. These pads are known for their firm structure, moisture resistance, and long-lasting performance. As a result, they provide excellent support for woven carpets, resist mold and mildew, and maintain their shape over time, making them a reliable option for both residential and commercial applications.
Real horsehair pads represent a more traditional form of carpet cushioning and are made from natural horsehair fibers. These pads are dense, breathable, and extremely durable, offering a high level of performance that has been valued for decades. Their natural composition allows for excellent airflow, which helps reduce moisture buildup beneath the carpet. In addition, they are known for their exceptional longevity and are often considered a premium option, particularly in historic restorations or high-end installations where quality and authenticity are important.
Felt pads are constructed from recycled textile fibers that are compressed into dense sheets, resulting in a heavy and firm cushion. These pads are highly durable due to their density and are also considered environmentally friendly. Felt padding provides excellent support for heavier carpets and is especially effective in high-traffic areas. Additionally, it offers strong sound absorption, making it a practical choice for spaces where noise reduction is desired, such as multi-level homes or commercial environments.
Rubber pads, which can be made from either natural or synthetic rubber, are known for their dense and resilient structure. They are often available in flat or waffle patterns, each offering different performance benefits. Rubber padding is highly durable, resistant to crushing, and capable of maintaining its form even under heavy foot traffic. It also provides a comfortable level of support underfoot, making it a strong option for areas that require both durability and comfort.
Foam pads are made from a variety of foam materials, including polyurethane and memory foam, and are typically chosen for their softness and cushioning properties. These pads are lightweight and available in a range of densities, allowing for flexibility depending on the desired level of comfort and budget. Foam padding enhances comfort underfoot and is easy to install, making it a popular choice for residential spaces. While it may not always offer the same level of durability as denser materials, it remains a practical and cost-effective option for areas where comfort is the primary concern.
ONE STEP FURTHER
For my one step further, I wanted to contrast foam and felt. Foam and felt carpet pads differ significantly in structure, performance, and ideal use. Foam padding, typically made from polyurethane or memory foam, is soft, lightweight, and designed to maximize comfort underfoot, making it a popular choice for residential spaces like bedrooms and living rooms. It offers a cushioned feel and is often more budget-friendly, but it can compress over time, especially in high-traffic areas, which may reduce its long-term durability. In contrast, felt padding is made from densely compressed recycled textile fibers, resulting in a much firmer and heavier material. While it does not provide the same plush feel as foam, felt excels in durability, support, and sound absorption, making it better suited for high-traffic areas and heavier carpet types such as Berber. Overall, foam prioritizes comfort and affordability, whereas felt emphasizes strength, longevity, and performance under pressure.
