Weaves
When understanding the textile construction and testing process it is essential for an interior designer to specify the materials for a space. This could include commercial, hospitality, and healthcare environments. The performance of the fabric, its durability, and fire resistance impacts the compliance to the codes. As well as the safety for the end user.
1. Basic Weaving
Basic weaving is when two yarn systems interlace, the warp goes vertical and the weft goes horizontal on the loom. The simplest weave structures are plain weave, twill weave, and satin weave.
A plain weave is the most basic over-under pattern. It creates a balanced and durable fabric that can be used in cotton shirting, muslin, and many different types of upholstery fabrics. A plain weave is a strong and stable weave as well as having a resistance to snagging. However, it is common for this type to wrinkle easy. It is commonly used also in residential spaces for upholstery and drapery.
2. Twill Weaving
Twill weave creates a diagonal rib pattern. After getting to watch the video this process was much clearer. The diagonal rib pattern is also seen in denim. You can easily identify this pattern by the diagonal line as well as the softer drape compared to the pain weave. Also compared to plain weave it is much more resistant to wrinkle as well as stronger due to the tight yarn packing.
It is commonly used in upholstery fabrics as well as durable seating and commercial applications. The twill's structure distributes the stress evenly making it good for high use furniture. Something that needs to be durable in heavy use settings.
3. Jacquard Weaving
Jacquard weaving uses a special type of loom that allows complex patterns to be woven directly into the fabric rather than the pattern be printed on top. It has an intricate pattern such as florals, damasks, or different types of geometries. The pattern is woven into the structure of the yarn no on the surface. It tends to be a heavier and more luxurious weave.
It tends to be used as a high-end drapery or decorative upholstery. This weave has a great opportunity to be used in decorative ways in the hospitality world. Making the fabrics a feature compared to a more general textile. Jacquard fabrics have an effect in the space that elevates the space while still maintaining the durability of the fabric. I found it so interesting getting to do more research on this style of weaving and the process and evolution of the trade.
KNITS – Weft & Warp Knitting
Unlike weaving, knitting uses loops of yarn. A weft knit the yarn runs horizontally and tends to be softer and have some give to it. It is commonly used in apparel as well as being less stable. The warp knit the yarn runs vertically and is more stable and less stretchy. Its common use is in performance textiles as well as commercial uses. The knit itself provides flexibility and comfort than a weave. The warp knits are great for upholstery or commercial uses, and the weft are rarely used in upholstery because of the distortion.
It was very interesting getting to do more research about the differnece and actually getting to see it visually. I found this diagram that I think helps to identify the difference between the two and what it physically looks like.
FIRE – Fiber Identification by Burning
The burn test is a traditional method for identifying the fiber content of a textile as well as knowing the flame behavior, smoke color, odor that comes from burning, as well as the ash. Getting to watch videos of the textiles burning was so interesting to understanding the reactions. Cotton is a natural fiber, and it tends to smell like burning paper as well as having a soft gray ash. Woll is also a natural fiber and smells like burning hair. Polyester melts because it is a man-made fiber and it also forms a hard bead and has a chemical odor.
Synthetic fibers melt and drip, which can be extremely hazardous in an interior setting. Natural fibers burn but do not melt, I love how this shows Gods creation in a clear way. The way he creates the fibers that he has given us are less harmful when fire tested.
Testing Textiles
Textile testing ensures that the materials meet performance and fire code standards, especially in commercial interiors.
Developed by the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 260 evaluates upholstery fabric resistance to smoldering ignition from a lit cigarette. It is required for many commercial projects as well as helps to reduce fire spread risks in public spaces. Passing NFPA 260 does not mean a fabric is fully fireproof; it only addresses one ignition scenario.
Tensile testing measures how much pulling force a fabric can withstand before breaking. This is used for seating upholstery, contract fabrics, and high-traffic spaces. Stronger tensile ratings mean longer lifespan as well as better performance under stress.
Abrasion tests measure how well fabric resists surface wear. The higher double rub counts indicate a greater durability of the fabric.

One Step Further
For my one step further, I wanted to look at how different types of fibers reacted in different weaves. I studied this in a video. It was interesting getting to see different fabrics react in different environments.

Anna, This first diagram is perhaps one of the best I have seen- thank you for sharing it. It is so simple and clear that it helps all students remember warp and weft. The other diagrams and details are also very good. Well done!
